Inter-IIT Sports Meet comes back to IITM in 2015: A look Ahead & An Appeal
IIT Madras is getting ready to host the 51st Inter-IIT Sports Meet on campus in December 2015, and as we do that our minds turn to bring the sports facilities up to par for the meet. And we need your support to make that happen.
As you know IITM has a glorious history of success in the Inter-IIT, 18 wins thus far, more than any other IIT. The first Inter-IIT meet was held in 1961, with just five IITs competing in five sports. IIT Madras has hosted the event 7 times earlier, but this time the challenge to get ready is great. The 51st Inter-IIT Sports Meet will host 16 IITs competing in 13 different sport events. We need to get ready to host the mother of all Inter-IITs.
There are 3 aspects where more work is needed: We need a synthetic track in the Stadium, we need a renovation of the stadium pavilion, and we need synthetic courts for basketball and volleyball. No other IIT has a synthetic track, and this will enable IITM to host international track events. Along with our world-class swimming pool, and the Chemplast/ Sanmar cricket ground (which has previously hosted a women’s ODI), this will seriously raise our profile in the international athletic circles.
Our Engineering Unit has estimated the collective cost of these upgrades at Rs. 5 crores, and we’d like our alumni to step up and be counted.
Please donate towards the “Inter-IIT 2015” project; no amount is too small or (of course) too large.
